In my last post, I wrote about my New Years Resolution of NOT neglecting my blog!! With the help of a "cold day" off of school, I am posting for the second time this week!! My second New Years Resolution is to plan ahead a little more. This is my third year of teaching and I am ready to stop flying by the seat of my pants, especially when it comes to seasonal/time sensitive activities and units!! Therefore, I am taking today to prep for the 100th Day of School, which is still a whopping 22 more school days away for us! In this post, I'll share many of my own ideas/creations/past projects as well and some new ideas that I found today and want to try out this year!

Nothing beats a cold day/work day at home! I could get used to this!
Okay, let's begin with some fun door displays that I found while perusing Pinterest today! Here's my favorite that I plan to put up this year!!

Last year, I began the day with making 100th day crowns. Students color 100 objects within the #100 and then add up all of the objects to make sure that it equals 100. The studenst cut around the number and we staple them to construction paper strips to make crowns! The crowns that I make are from an old copy that I got from my cooperating teacher when I was student teaching. However, a very similar crown can be downloaded for FREE from TpT. Enjoy this printable from Mrs. Ahren's store.

My kids wore these all day and loved it!! Simple and fun!!

I love having the kids complete interactive math and literacy activities for the 100th Day! Here are some of the activities they will complete throughout the day!! All of these activities can be found in my TpT store: Hundredth Day of School FUN!

We focus heavily on word families during our literacy block. One of the students' 100th Day Challenges is writing 100 word family words!! Most of them are short vowel word families because that's what we focus on for the first half of the year. They work in partners or small groups. It's awesome to see how many words they can write now!! Bless their little learning hearts!

Found this adorable chart idea on Pinterest today! Love this idea from KinderCraze! Plan to do this after the kids have written their word family words!

We also write about what the world will look like in 100 years!

We also read my favorite 100th Day Poem and funny 100th day books!

#sorrynotsorry. No cute drawings. I'm not an artist.

Just a few of my favorites! I especially love the Robin Hill School series because the teacher's name is Mrs. Connor, which I conveniently change to Mrs. O'Connor. The kids always get the giggles!

Alright, on to math!

I have my students complete these math activities in centers. Students rotate to each center throughout the math block!

Center 1: The kids test out some probability with 100 dice rolls and 100 coin flips! Also a great way to practice making tally marks in an organized fashion!

I dig out my fun dice for the 100th day!! It's amazing how motivating new dice can be!

Center 2: I CAN do 100 math problems!

Center 3: Sorting a bag of 100 pattern blocks and recording your findings! You know you all have these!! An oldie but a goodie, as my mother would say!

Divide your blocks into bags of 100!

Some of the sorting methods from last year!

Not sure that this method is the most effective!
But boy, did he have fun!
Here are a another idea that I may add to the mix this year from Tip Junkie!

Okay! Two more things that made our day complete last year! The first was our 100th Day TENS FRAMES SNACKS! This was a huge hit! Grab a freebie of this sheet here!

I had all of the snacks on the back table. Students went through the line with a cup and counted out ten of each snack item. Then, they organized the snacks in the tens frames at their desks.

The end result!!

Finally, our 100th Day of School Art Project! Got this fun and easy idea from The First Grade Parade. Give each student cut outs of the number, 100, and they create a picture out of it! Loved to see their creativity shine with this one!

Well, that's all I have folks! Can't wait to do all of this again this year and try out my new finds!

100th Day! Hooray!

Wow! What a fun day... and as usual, I planned WAAAY too much!! We were so busy! We read 100th Day books, read 100th Day poetry, and did 100th Day math centers and literacy activities. We completed 100 exercises throughout the day and attempted to be silent for 100 seconds on the carpet (that is until we all ended up laughing and giggling... first grade laughter is so contagious!) Here is a look at some of our 100th Day of School Fun!! For a copy of our 100th Day packet, visit my TPT store!

This is my back table before the day started. We really did not need very many materials to enjoy our 100th day!
We started our day by coloring a picture with 100 little pictures inside it. Students had to color the objects based on a code. They counted each object and wrote an addition number model that equaled 100. After finishing their counting, we cut out our 100s and made them into a 100s day crown!
In first grade, we practice word families almost every day. One of the students' challenges today was to write 100 word family words with a partner! I was impressed with how they FLEW through this activity. I guess all of our practice has been paying off!
On to math... students completed several math centers all to do with the number, 100. Students rolled a dice 100 times and recorded their results. They flipped a coin 100 times and predicted the outcome. We solved 100 addition problems. We colored a hundreds chart according to a fun set of directions.
These girls are recording their coin flips!
The favorite math center of the day was sorting a bag of 100 pattern blocks and counting how many of each block were in the bag.

This afternoon, students wrote about what they thought the world would be like 100 years from now. They seemed to really think that people would be living in houses made out of ice (which makes sense since we have had 4 days off of school this winter due to below zero temperatures.....) HA!
And finally, our special 100th Day snack with 100 TREATS! Students got 10 of the following treats to organize in 10s frames.
Raisins, Gummy Bears, Cheerios, Kix, Chocolate Chips, Goldfish, M&Ms, Mini Marshmellows, Chex, and Butterscotch!!! YUM!

Needless to say, it was a fun-filled day of learning. What a great way to celebrate our accomplishments this year! And the best part is, we have so much more learning to do (which is starting to stress me out... I hope I'm not the only one!) And this teacher is exhausted... on to watching the Olympics and probably falling asleep by 8:00, oops! :)

The 99th Day of School

In preparation for the 100th day of school, we did a fantastic art project with the number, 100. When I saw this project posted on The First Grade Parade today, I knew that we had to do this to get us in the 100TH DAY SPIRIT! I gave each student a 1 and two 0s and they had to use their "100" to make a creative drawing. Great for special reasoning and SO FUN!

My firsties: hard at work! So creative!
I love seeing their creative minds at work! Among our 100 artwork were monster trucks, butterflies, wild animals, a depiction of outer space, and many other fantastic ideas!

Some of our finished artwork... Now displayed on our door!

My favorite 100 DAY poem ready, 100 DAY crown made, and 100 DAY books found!! Is it bad that I am probably more excited than my students?? The 100th day of school is such a big deal! I love looking at how far we have come since the beginning of the year!! One sweet little darling asked me today if after the 100th day of school, she would be in second grade. I could tell she looked very concerned and was relieved when I told her that there would still be 80 more days of first grade! I'm not ready to give them up yet! (...already feeling my tears that I know will come at the end of the school year with the fabulous group that I lucky to work with this year... let's not think about that yet!)

Take a peek at my 100TH DAY PACKET OF FUN for my students to use as they complete their 100TH DAY centers and activities tomorrow!! It is on sale right now in my TPT store!

Gearing up for the 100th Day! Hooray!

Throughout practicum, student teaching, and my first year of teaching, I have seen the 100th Day of School celebrated in many different ways! To prepare for this year's celebration on Wednesday, I finally compiled all of those great ideas (and many of my own new ideas) into a 100TH DAY PACKET OF FUN for students to record their 100th day activities in! Check it out on my TPT store! See the preview below! Can't wait to use it with my firsties!!
