Math Freebie Extravaganza!

Hello there! I could not be more excited to write this blog post! I am a huge proponent of math workshop in elementary classrooms. Four years ago, I switched from a more traditional math block to a math workshop approach and I have never looked back. My students are so much more engaged and I can meet their individual needs so much more successfully!

The honest truth about beginning math workshop is that it does require a lot of prep up front to prepare engaging math centers. Over the last few years, I created over 100 math centers and then printed, cut out, laminated, and organized them for use in my classroom. In the first few years of math workshop, I used more paper/pencil activities and worksheets in my math tubs as I slowly build my collection of prepped math centers. This year, I am finding that I have a well-developed selection of math centers to pull from each week. Now, that is not to say that I don't use paper/pencil work in the bins from time to time, but most of my math centers are interactive and engaging for students.

One thing that I have learned over the past few years is that I need a way to hold students accountable for the interactive work that they are completing. The majority of students in my class each year would complete the centers and do well because they are engaged and want to learn the math skills. However, we all know that you are always going to have those few students that try to get out of their work and don't devote their full attention to their centers. For this reason, each of my math centers has an exit slip that corresponds to the content in that center. My students complete this exit slip after completing the center which holds them accountable and provides me a simple way to assess their progress.

My purpose for this blog post is to provide you with some FREE math centers to get you started with trying math workshop or to add to your own collection of centers if you are already using the math workshop model in your classroom. Some of these centers have fun themes and some are more general for any time of the year! Simply click each photo to download the center! (If you want the short cut to my TeachersPayTeachers 10 Free Math Centers page - please click this link) Enjoy!

Skip Counting!

This center includes skip counting cards from 2s, 5s, and 10s and an exit slip for each set!

This Dab it Dot it Math Facts center is always one of my students' favorites! We use bingo dauber markers to find math facts that equal a given number. Then students record the math facts at the bottom of the page!

For the Number of the Day, I post a number on the board. Students complete the worksheet based on that given number. Easy peasy prep for this one!

Dominoes are a great math tool for teaching early addition and subtraction. My students love using dominoes as manipulatives! When they finish their work, I allow them to build little domino towers.... you ALL know that students can't get through a domino activity without using them to build something! LOL!

Learning to count money is an important life skill and it also helps students develop a better number sense. In this money math center, students determine the number of cents on each card and then match the letter on the card to the correct amount on the exit slip. I put these cards on rings for each storage and use.

This baseball base ten center is great for spring. Students match the expanded form, base ten blocks, and the traditional number in these fun puzzles.

Number grids are one of my favorite resources for first grade number sense. I found this idea on Pinterest several years ago and I love it. I simply print these 120 number grids of fun colored cardstock and then cut them apart. I have about 15 different colors in a bin and they are all cut differently. Students can either complete the puzzles by laying them on top of a already assembled number grid or without the white number grid guide. Easy for differentiation and students can trade their color for a new one when they complete it!

This monster math roll and add center is one of the first centers that I created four years ago. If was an instant hit with my students. Now, let's be real... I have had to replace the monster dice in the last few years. They are made of thick cardstock, taped together at the corners. They have fallen victim to students who have accidentally stepped on them! Eek! Ha! I probably got about 3 years out of the dice before having to replace them! I laminate these roll and add mats so that students complete them using dry erase markers (I recommend using skinny, black dry erase markers - I have found that they are the easiest to erase).

This was another of my original math centers that I created. Students pick money amount cards and then use plastic coins to make that amount. Students record the amount and how they made that amount on a corresponding worksheet. Simple and effective... I don't know about you, but my students LOVE working with fake coins!

I use this apple counting by 2s center at the beginning of the year. We always do an apple themed week and this is the perfect addition to our math that week!

Okay, so there you have it! Ten free math centers to get you started on your math workshop journey! Please feel free to contact me at firstiefavorites@gmail.com if you have any questions for me about math workshop or how I use these centers during my math block!

Spring has Sprung!!

I am very happily writing to you from my spring break Monday morning. Nothing better than your first morning of not setting an alarm. Pure bliss!!

Spring has arrived in our classroom and I'm currently in the works of prepping more spring activities for when we return from spring break!

RAINBOW SIMILES

Last week, I tried out a new craft and writing activity from Teacher by the Beach and I LOVED it!! Her FREE activity can be found on her blog... click this link to view her post!

Here's her photo of the finished product! Apparently, I forgot to take a photo after I hung ours in the hallway.

We wrote Rainbow Similes and made some rainbow artwork to go with our writing!

We began by brainstorming things for each color of the rainbow. It was a perfect chance for us to use the "pair and share" method of sharing ideas with a partner before sharing with the whole group. Here is a peek at our brainstorm... please excuse my disgusting, smudgy whiteboard!

Then, I added to Teacher by the Beach's idea by creating a "planning page" for my students to write their similes on. I have many students in reading/writing intervention this year, so I knew that they would need a little more guidance to create their similes.

Here's a photo of one of my adorable firsties making his final copy! Students traced over their writing with a Sharpie, which was very exciting for them and make the writing look crisp and clean!

After finishing our writing, students made rainbow artwork.

Such a fun activity! Now our hallway looks so bright and cheery!

APRIL WRITING AND PHONICS PRINTABLES

Click the photo or this link to see this in my TpT store.

This past weekend, I created by second set of Writing and Phonics Printables... now ready for APRIL! I wrote about this idea in my March post, but I created these simple monthly printables as take-home activities for my first grade students who are in need of writing intervention. I had a solid group of about 5 students who came into first grade reading below grade level. They are making great gains in reading so now I'm focusing more on their writing and phonics/spelling skills. I have a fabulous group of parents this year who want additional resources for their children to work on at home. I've received great feedback from those parents after completing similar resources for the month of March... so here we go... ready for the month of April.

Now, that being said, these could easily be used in the classroom as well!

Here's a look at some of the activities included in the pack. Click this link to download 5 of these printables for FREE!

A FREEBIE and A STEAL!

Finally, I have a few Easter/Spring math activities up my sleeve. The first one is a freebie!! Grab this fun Easter Math Sort from my TpT store! Can't wait to work this into my math workshop centers!

Finally, the steal! Grab this Spring Mini Math Book for only $1.00!!! Skills include name collection boxes, missing number subtraction, adding/subtracting 10s, What's My Rule? (function machines), fact families, and telling time to 5 minute increments.

Well, that's what I have for my spring activities! Can't wait to check out TpT for other activities I can grab for next week!

Oh for the LOVE of Math!

Lazy Sunday for me today! Perfect time to start prepping math centers for Valentine's Day! With math workshop in full swing, I'm always looking for fun resources and creating my own math centers to keep my firsties engaged and learning! Right now, I'm always trying to stay a few weeks ahead in my math center planning so that I have time to make, print, copy, cut, and laminate all of my centers before we are ready to use them!

That means it is time to start prepping Valentine's Day!! I am so excited about these fun, easy activities and I took a little time for some guilt free Valentine's Day pinning... These are some of my favorite non-classroom ideas.

Okay, now for my math centers! I spent yesterday, working away on my laptop and I am so happy to share these centers with you! Click this link or the photo to see these in my TpT store!

Center One:
Counting tens and ones using Base Ten blocks. This is a new concept for my firsties. We use the Everyday Math curriculum and it is just being introduced. This center is simple and will be perfect for their beginning knowledge of base ten.

Each card has a letter on it. After students count the base ten blocks, students connect the letter to the number they counted on the recording sheet.

Center Two:
My students are great at counting by 5s to 100. However, when they get into the hundreds, they start to fall apart. This center will help them to continue their skip counting into the hundreds. They will order the counting by 5s cards from 105-220 and then record then on a half sheet.

Center Three:
Another new concept for us is using the greater than and less than symbols. All of my students can compare numbers, but they are stumbling over these symbols. This center will give them much needed practice by sorting statements as true or false.

Center Four:
In the last center from my Valentine Math Centers, students fill in the missing addends in addition problems. Students complete addition facts to equal 7, 8, 9, and 10. My plan is to laminate these mats. Students will fill in the missing addend with dry erase marker and then record some of their answers on a half sheet of paper.

Center 5: (FREEBIE)
Last year, I picked up some of these foam heart stickers from Michael's on clearance after Valentine's Day. I'm sure that they have something similar this year if you are interested in creating this center!

I sorted out the big, flat hearts so that I could write numbers on them with black Sharpie.

I wrote numbers 0-9 on the hearts and put 20 hearts in each basket. Students will pick two hearts from the basket and write an addition problem with those numbers on this free printable! Saw this idea on Pinterest from the amazing Cara Carroll. Love her!

So that's a peek at my Valentine math plans! I hope that you enjoyed this post! All of these resources can be downloaded in my Valentine Math Centers!

Summer School Wrap Up... I Want My Firsties Back!

So I'm breathing a little sigh of relief today... I have been teaching summer school for the last three weeks with 3-5 grade students and today was our last day. I enjoyed the change from my firsties but I totally can't wait to be with first graders again this school year! I miss my little kiddos who get excited about getting to use markers or picking a "special" spot in the room! My experience in summer school totally reaffirmed my LOVE for FIRST GRADE!

Alright, now that I got that off my chest... I've been working on some Insect Math Centers for the beginning of the school year. My goal is always to make them interactive with some sort of manipulatives or cards for the kids to use... but I also want them to be responsible for their work. Therefore, I always try to include a small recording sheet with the center for me to assess them on!

Here's a FREEBIE of one of my math centers, BEE a Math Rockstar!

The goal is to order cards with numbers 1-30 and record the numbers.

Enjoy!

We LOVE Poetry!

What a beautiful Saturday morning... up early working on my Poetry unit, which I just posted to TPT... whew, relief!!!
Doing a little shopping this afternoon with my sister and my cousin... It's going to be a great day! Love these girlies!

So during the month of April, we have been writing poetry for National Poetry Month... as I'm sure many of you are! When I first told the kiddos about our poetry unit, I was met with several groans... but they have all realized that poetry is fun, creative, different, silly, exciting! They LOVE it!!

We jumped head first into the unit by doing a really creative project that I blogged about last week.... It got the kids' creative juices flowing and was a great start to the unit. The project incorporated writing a poem about spring and doing a great Kandinsky-inspired art project. Click this link for my previous post, We Welcome Spring with Kandinsky.

During our unit, we wrote the following types of poetry and as we went along, I created/recreated my previous poetry writing paper, planning sheets, examples.... ALL OF IT!

Shape Poems
Couplets
Alliterations
Acrostic Poems
Color Poems
Cinquains
Haikus
Word Poems

Here's a peek at our Shape Poems and our Word Poems... the writing paper has been updated since I did this a few weeks ago! Check out the FREEBIES for these poems!

WORD POEMS:

Students had to write a poem creatively to represent its meaning. The writing paper has been updated in this FREEBIE for WORD POEMS.

SHAPE POEMS:

Students wrote about a shape... where they see it, what they like about it, etc. Then they write their poem around that shape. Here's a link to the FREEBIE of the SHAPE POEMS.

For the rest of my poetry pack, click the LINK to go to my TPT store!

Wow, it feels so great to have this all organized... Next year, I will be GOOD TO GO! :)

Beautiful Spring Weather = Pure Bliss!

I don't know about you... but I am LOVING this gorgeous spring weather that we are having in Wisconsin this week. It totally makes all of the difference in my patience and my motivation!! (and it does the same for my kiddos too!) Posted this photo on Facebook this morning. I knew it was going to be a great day! I could just FEEL IT! :)

"Sun is shining, Starbucks in hand, and cute new tubs for my math centers.
It's going to be a good day!"

Now for a quick post with a few FREEBIES!

LONG VOWEL PRACTICE:

Since coming back from winter break, we have been focusing on long vowel spelling patterns for our phonics work. LONG E can be so tricky because of the different patterns so I put together this Long E printables pack... including { rainbow writing - nice & neat handwriting practice - ABC ordering - word sorts - sentence writing - connect 4 games } all focusing on LONG E patterns of EE and EA. The thing that I am enjoying about using these is that they are truly "print and go" with the exception of the connect four games (in which you need to cut out the cards-- still, that's easy!).

For the full pack of LONG E PRINTABLES, visit my TPT store! It's only $2.00!

TELLING TIME:

One skill that we really work on in first grade is telling time to the five minute mark. Common Core requires first graders to tell time to the hour and half hour, but our Everyday Math series expects students to tell time to the 5 minutes. This is a skill that first graders need lots of practice with and I am always trying to think of new ways to practice!!
I saw this idea on Pinterest last year... I can't track down the pin anymore, but I made these cardstock dice. One dice has the "hour" time and the other dice has the "minutes." Students roll the dice and then make it on their clock. Perfect for partner practice or individual practice during math workshop! Grab a FREE COPY OF THE TELLING TIME DICE here. Enjoy!

A few other fun practice tools... Click the links to visit my TPT store!

Telling Time Bingo (whole class set)

Enjoy these fun freebies! Now I need to get out and enjoy this fabulous weather!

Five for Friday: Spring Break Recap!

Wow! What a great spring break! Got so much accomplished for school... but in bigger news, my husband and I started HOUSE HUNTING! (and we found a home that we LOVE!) More on that subject to come... I don't want to get too far ahead of myself!

Here's my Five for Friday (Saturday... oops!) recap of my spring break! Wishing that I had more time off, but also ready to get back to my kiddos!

http://doodlebugsteaching.blogspot.com/

LOADS OF MATH FREEBIES!!

One great thing about spring break is spending a little extra time CREATING resources instead of scrambling to get ready for each week on Sundays... am I right?

First of all, I finished Chapters 7 and 8 of my ADVANCED MATH BOXES for Everyday Math series for first grade... I have posted about these before, but what I was noticing with Everyday Math was that the extra practice math boxes were too easy for a solid group of my students. This year, I have been creating math boxes that challenge those higher math students... and the best part is, they are FREE and will always be FREE in my TPT store! I do ask that if you take advantage of this great FREEBIE, please leave feedback in my store as appreciation for the time that I've put into them! If you are feeling SUPER APPRECIATIVE, you could even start following me on TPT! Click the snapshots to check them out now!!

Secondly, I have been spending LOTS of time cutting out lamination to get some of my MONSTER MATH games and activities ready to go for next week! In honor of my excitement to use these, I decided to offer my favorite activity from my monster math set as a FREEBIE... Monster Roll and Add!! Check out the picture below and click -this link- for your own free copy of the dice and printable! Enjoy!
If you like my Monster Roll and Add freebie, check out my MONSTER MATH CENTERS FOR NUMBER SENSE in my TPT store! Six different monster-themed math centers ($2.50).

MAKING FLUENCY FOLDERS! WOOHOO!
I cannot even begin to tell you how excited I am about my new fluency folders!! I recently downloaded ALL of Cara Carroll's Rock Your Fluency packs from her TPT store and I LOVE THEM!! I am using her materials to put together fluency folders for students to use during our Daily 5 word work centers because they focus on the Dolch sight words... which we work on heavily in first grade!!
All of my supplies and materials!
Take a peek at my folders that I put together and a huge THANK YOU to Cara Carroll for creating these fabulous resources!
Here's an example of one fluency folder for the Pre-Primer Dolch words. I have 5 folders for each Dolch list so that I can differentiate for each student's reading level (25 folders in total!). The folders are color coded: Pre-Primer(Blue), Primer (Lime), First Grade (Purple), Second Grade (Yellow), and Third Grade (Red).

Here's what I included in each folder:
2 rings of fluency phrases in each folder!
1 Roll, Read, & Highlight page! Students roll a dice and read a phrase! LOVE THESE!
5 fluency stories for kids to read!
Fluency is something that I have really been diving into this year!! I love Cara Carroll's fluency packs... they are a great way to supplement our Dolch sight word practice. Check out a few of my own creations to practice sight words!

Enjoy and HAPPY FLUENCY PRACTICE!!

SUPPORTING FELLOW TEACHERS AND GIVING BACK!

This week, a speech teacher at my school contacted me and another teacher who are sellers on TPT. One of her friends is battling cancer and they are having a fundraiser for her in another school district in our area. Our speech teacher was wondering if we each could create a basket with some of our TPT products to raffle off as part of the fundraiser. I ran out today and picked up this adorable basket and some fun teacher goodies at Michael's Craft Store... still need to put everything together!

Now I'm in the process of printing out and laminating a class set of my Telling Time Bingo game and a few of my other favorite products!!

Love the feeling of giving back!! Totally brightened my day when my colleague asked me to be a contributor to a special cause!

SPRING TIME!!

Loving this spring break weather... other than the snow flurries that I saw yesterday afternoon. It felt great to get out for a refreshing spring run!!
Found this gem at Kohl's... couldn't resist!
GO BADGERS!!

My alma mater, WISCONSIN, is in the FINAL FOUR TONIGHT!! WOOT WOOT!
Flashback to my freshman year in college!
AAAAAAAND, I feel a special connection to this team because two of the players, Frank Kaminsky and Ben Brust, came to my classroom last spring and read to my students!!!
Ben Brust reading a Franklin story!

Whew... that turned into a very long post! I hope that you find it useful! Enjoy the rest of your weekend!!
