Math Freebie Extravaganza!

Hello there! I could not be more excited to write this blog post! I am a huge proponent of math workshop in elementary classrooms. Four years ago, I switched from a more traditional math block to a math workshop approach and I have never looked back. My students are so much more engaged and I can meet their individual needs so much more successfully!

The honest truth about beginning math workshop is that it does require a lot of prep up front to prepare engaging math centers. Over the last few years, I created over 100 math centers and then printed, cut out, laminated, and organized them for use in my classroom. In the first few years of math workshop, I used more paper/pencil activities and worksheets in my math tubs as I slowly build my collection of prepped math centers. This year, I am finding that I have a well-developed selection of math centers to pull from each week. Now, that is not to say that I don't use paper/pencil work in the bins from time to time, but most of my math centers are interactive and engaging for students.

One thing that I have learned over the past few years is that I need a way to hold students accountable for the interactive work that they are completing. The majority of students in my class each year would complete the centers and do well because they are engaged and want to learn the math skills. However, we all know that you are always going to have those few students that try to get out of their work and don't devote their full attention to their centers. For this reason, each of my math centers has an exit slip that corresponds to the content in that center. My students complete this exit slip after completing the center which holds them accountable and provides me a simple way to assess their progress.

My purpose for this blog post is to provide you with some FREE math centers to get you started with trying math workshop or to add to your own collection of centers if you are already using the math workshop model in your classroom. Some of these centers have fun themes and some are more general for any time of the year! Simply click each photo to download the center! (If you want the short cut to my TeachersPayTeachers 10 Free Math Centers page - please click this link) Enjoy!

Skip Counting!

This center includes skip counting cards from 2s, 5s, and 10s and an exit slip for each set!

This Dab it Dot it Math Facts center is always one of my students' favorites! We use bingo dauber markers to find math facts that equal a given number. Then students record the math facts at the bottom of the page!

For the Number of the Day, I post a number on the board. Students complete the worksheet based on that given number. Easy peasy prep for this one!

Dominoes are a great math tool for teaching early addition and subtraction. My students love using dominoes as manipulatives! When they finish their work, I allow them to build little domino towers.... you ALL know that students can't get through a domino activity without using them to build something! LOL!

Learning to count money is an important life skill and it also helps students develop a better number sense. In this money math center, students determine the number of cents on each card and then match the letter on the card to the correct amount on the exit slip. I put these cards on rings for each storage and use.

This baseball base ten center is great for spring. Students match the expanded form, base ten blocks, and the traditional number in these fun puzzles.

Number grids are one of my favorite resources for first grade number sense. I found this idea on Pinterest several years ago and I love it. I simply print these 120 number grids of fun colored cardstock and then cut them apart. I have about 15 different colors in a bin and they are all cut differently. Students can either complete the puzzles by laying them on top of a already assembled number grid or without the white number grid guide. Easy for differentiation and students can trade their color for a new one when they complete it!

This monster math roll and add center is one of the first centers that I created four years ago. If was an instant hit with my students. Now, let's be real... I have had to replace the monster dice in the last few years. They are made of thick cardstock, taped together at the corners. They have fallen victim to students who have accidentally stepped on them! Eek! Ha! I probably got about 3 years out of the dice before having to replace them! I laminate these roll and add mats so that students complete them using dry erase markers (I recommend using skinny, black dry erase markers - I have found that they are the easiest to erase).

This was another of my original math centers that I created. Students pick money amount cards and then use plastic coins to make that amount. Students record the amount and how they made that amount on a corresponding worksheet. Simple and effective... I don't know about you, but my students LOVE working with fake coins!

I use this apple counting by 2s center at the beginning of the year. We always do an apple themed week and this is the perfect addition to our math that week!

Okay, so there you have it! Ten free math centers to get you started on your math workshop journey! Please feel free to contact me at firstiefavorites@gmail.com if you have any questions for me about math workshop or how I use these centers during my math block!

Mini Math Books: The Perfect Practice!

This year, I have literacy interventions coming out of my ears! I feel like I'm spending so much time planning individualized activities and interventions for my struggling readers! Over half of my class came in reading below grade level this year so it has been like "reading boot camp" in my classroom! I'm happy to report that three of my struggling readers are now at grade level, which makes me feel like all the extra work is worth it! I still have eight more that are below where they need to be... but they are coming along!

We have a time set aside in our day for intervention, which is great because I can spend time with the kids who really need it. However, I'm sure all of you primary teachers understand my dilemma of how to keep my other students challenged, yet independent, while I am meeting with my intervention groups!

Here's what I came up with... MINI MATH PRACTICE BOOKS!

The best part is... they are NO PREP! Simply print the pages back to back and staple along the center! Easy peasy!

Each week, my non-intervention students complete these fun math books! Each week is a different theme to keep the kids interested and motivated! We use the Everyday Math curriculum in our district, so the mini math books roughly follow the skills in the series.

Here's a peek at the most recent mini math book: Football Edition!

These math practice books are a total lifesaver and my kids love them! As we go throughout the school year, I plan to keep making them almost weekly.

Included in the bundle are the following themes:
- apples - halloween - trick or treat -
- fall leaves - football -

If you purchase the bundle, I will be adding more books throughout the school year that you may continue to download as part of your original purchase!

Enjoy!

Summer School Wrap Up... I Want My Firsties Back!

So I'm breathing a little sigh of relief today... I have been teaching summer school for the last three weeks with 3-5 grade students and today was our last day. I enjoyed the change from my firsties but I totally can't wait to be with first graders again this school year! I miss my little kiddos who get excited about getting to use markers or picking a "special" spot in the room! My experience in summer school totally reaffirmed my LOVE for FIRST GRADE!

Alright, now that I got that off my chest... I've been working on some Insect Math Centers for the beginning of the school year. My goal is always to make them interactive with some sort of manipulatives or cards for the kids to use... but I also want them to be responsible for their work. Therefore, I always try to include a small recording sheet with the center for me to assess them on!

Here's a FREEBIE of one of my math centers, BEE a Math Rockstar!

The goal is to order cards with numbers 1-30 and record the numbers.

Enjoy!

Five for Friday: It's May!

Another great, relaxing, sunny Saturday morning! So thankful for lazy Saturday mornings!! Loving my Sara Bareilles Pandora Radio station, steaming cup of coffee (loaded with Hershey's chocolate creamer... oops!), and it's time to do some blogging!

Linking up with Doodlebug's Five for Friday... with 5 great things about my week!

MATH FLUENCY!

As part of our math workshop, I have been teaching the kids about "MATH FLUENCY." We talk about fluency all the time during Daily 5... rereading texts, practicing sight words, etc. Then, we started talking about how having math fact fluency helps us to be more accurate and faster math thinkers. During math workshop, I have math fact rings for kids to practice while they are waiting for me at the back table to start "teacher time." It was a great way for my kiddos to warm up and get their math brains ready.

HOWEVER, what I was noticing is that students weren't taking the math fact practice seriously. They would take a ring of math facts and casually flip through them, look at the answers, and I don't think that they were really even looking at the math facts. THEN, I realized, WELL, DUH.... I never modeled how to correctly practice math fact fluency cards. We had talked about why they were important, but we NEVER talked about the correct way to practice. We stopped math workshop mid-rotation right then because I could not let this go on any longer... and it wasn't their fault... it was TOTALLY mine!

I modeled for my students how I go through a ring of math fluency cards and WOW, what a difference in their practicing for the rest of the week! This inspired me to make new sets of facts to add to our already existing collection...

Updated the set in my TPT store... now with 23 different fact sets!! Check it out here!

A-Z READING BAG UPDATE!

Back in February, I posted about how I send home books with students each week from the website, readinga-z.com. Here's my previous post about book organization and parent communication about the student's reading at home.

This week, I put together some new books to send home... my kids have been flying through the ones that I previously made!! Time consuming project... printing the pages, copying the covers on colorful cardstock, laminating the covers, binding them... but so worth it! When my kids came back from music and saw the new stack of books, they all wanted them NOW!

SPRING CONCERT PREP!

My kiddos have been practicing like crazy for their spring music concert with our fabulous music teacher. The theme for the concert is U-N-I-T-E, Songs of Peace and Joy. I absolutely love one of their songs... "This Is My Wish." Brings tears to my eyes when I hear their little voices singing this! I am creating the slideshow to accompany the performance... here's a sneak peek!

FINISHING UP POETRY!

We are finishing up our poetry books!! Just have to make the "About the Poet" page and decorate the covers of our books. My kids can't wait to take them home and show them to their families! We loved writing poetry. Unfortunately, I don't have any new pictures of the kids' writing... I'll have to update next week, when their books are completely finished. Check out our poetry unit in my TPT Store... The Ultimate Poetry Writing Unit for K - 1 -2.

Grab TWO freebies from my poetry unit in this previous post, We LOVE Poetry!!!

SWEET NOTES!!

Love when kids come to school with kind words that they wrote for you at home!! Warms my heart... this is why I do this!!

Quick Math Freebie!

So excited to use this new math center this week during math workshop.

All you need to do is write #s 0-10 on popsicle sticks and make a +, - , and = stick.

I did the numbers on one color and the symbols on another, but you wouldn't need to use colored sticks.

Students put sticks together to make addition and subtraction problems!

I don't know about you... but my kids love ANYTHING to do with popsicle sticks.

Monster Math!

Quick post tonight!

I've been hard at work this weekend, creating a set of Monster Math Number Sense activities for my first grade math centers (click the link to view in my TPT store). I can't wait to put some of them in place this week! I plan to post more photos of my kiddos using the centers soon so that you can get a better look, but here is a sneak peek of the Monster Roll and Add center.
My goal in creating these activities was for them to be laminated and used with dry erase markers (but they wouldn't have to be). I HATE making tons of copies of things and when things are laminated and ready to go, it makes it easier to pull out my centers at the drop of a hat!

Other activities in the pack include:
Monster Roll and Subtract
Monster Number Grid Puzzles
Monster Part-Part-Total problems
Monster Fact Families
Monster Before-Between-After
I still can't get over how cute these little monsters are... and my kids are going to love them! It's amazing how much more motivating an activity becomes when you slap a monster or other cute clip art on it!

More to come later! Enjoy!
